Alexandre Garcia Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazian Jiu Jitsu LogoAlexandre Garcia was born in October 28, 1975. Raised in the tough streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Alexandre was always very interested in learning martial arts. At age 9, he started taking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in a nearby catholic school. That was Alexandre’s first contact with Jiu-Jitsu.

A while later, Alexandre attended a seminar hosted by Royler Gracie (one of the members of the family who developed the sport), and found out that one of Royler’s students (Professor Marcão) had just opened a school close by, where he started training immediately.

In December 2002, Alexandre went to South Lake Tahoe where he lived for a couple years. On a trip to Reno, Alexandre met his wife and decided to move there, where he also opened a small business to get his life going. After establishing himself, Alexandre, moved by his passion for the sport, sought to continue his training. Still under the Gracie family, he trained hard for several years, earned his brown belt, and then, very confident of his skills, started teaching Jiu-Jitsu at Sports West Athletic Club. Right from the beginning of his teaching experience, Alexandre knew this was what he really loved doing and what he wanted to be his life.

Alexandre has won several tournaments in Brazil as well as in the United States. In addition, Alexandre was the head Jiu-Jitsu instructor at the the legendary UFC champion Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den. Alexandre then decided to do what he does best and opened his own BJJ school in Reno, Nevada. Alexandre is a part of the BJJ Chekmat organization, and trains under black belt Elizandro Beda.

F.I.T.: Functional Intense Training

Our mission is to create strong bodies and powerful minds. Working together to get fit, feel great and know that we Kan accomplish anything. Our number one goal is to inspire women to reach beyond what they thought was possible.

We Kan Run. We Kan Play. We Kan GET KAIA F.I.T.

This is not 24-hour fitness. This is not a room full of strangers. Sure, YOU drive to the gym. YOU show up everyday. YOU pay for it. But this is not just a gym full of individuals. This is Kaia FIT and this is your TEAM.

Part of why we ask you to commit to a class time is so that you commit to your classmates each morning or evening. These women are what keep you accountable, committed, inspired and driven. Kaia is a sport. You are an athlete. And your class is your team.

This is an important way to look at what we do at Kaia FIT. Especially during BRIK. The 6-week BRIK program is unique and challenging… finding camaraderie is vital. The women beside you each day feel exactly what you feel and are important in keeping you going, whether you realize it or not. It is equally important to recognize your role in this relationship. You might not know that you are someone else’s role model, example and silent teacher.

Kids and Horses

Empowering children and adults with special needs is a unique and important mission that is largely unfulfilled in the Northern Nevada community. Kids and Horses is a non-profit corporation that has offered therapeutic riding programs and a bridge for children and adults with disabilities since 1999.

The Kids & Horses facility in Minden, Nevada, is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Premier Accredited Center. It is the only center of its kind in northern Nevada. Instructors are certified and have training through NARHA, a national organization that provides leadership, operating standards, safety rules, regulations and insurance coverage for approved centers. Kids & Horses offers one-on-one individually tailored riding lessons to improve strength, coordination and self-esteem of students.

Kids & Horses’ scholarship programs allow children in need to receive assistance. Fifty-percent of students are on scholarship. Students who are not on scholarship pay $25 a lesson, less than a forth of the cost to the center for the instructor’s time, horse care and boarding. Kids & Horses scholarships are very important to our students and their families.

A grandmother of a scholarship recipient wrote: “Our 10 year-old granddaughter was born with spina bifida and has balance issues along with mental behavioral problems. When she first started in the program, she had a death hold on the saddle and was scared. Since then with the help of all of the volunteers and instructors, she can ride relaxed with no hands and even started to trot!”

A mother of another one of our scholarship recipients wrote: “Kids & Horses has been a life changing experience for our son. He has autism and we have tried so many programs that didn’t work. Taking the riding lessons has given him freedom and self-accomplishment. We never thought we would see that.”

Come and visit our ranch to see our life-changing work and find out how you can get involved in Kids & Horses!

Lasting Impressions by Robin

My name is Robin Walker-Evensen.  I started Lasting Impressions in June of 2012. One day while browsing the web I came across this unique and creative opportunity to capture and preserve your loved ones precious hand and foot prints at any age. I was immediately excited about the prospect of doing what I love and being my own boss. I remember as a child doing ceramics and how much I enjoyed it, so this turn of events is truly a blessing to me. It’s never to late to start a new chapter and change the course that you will travel. The possibilities are endless as to what we can create. Although I have only been doing this a few months, I can not emphasize how exciting and rewarding it is to see a parents expression and happiness when I show them their completed project that I have captured for them.

Unlike the plaster of paris prints we have all done as  children, these time pieces will last a lifetime, if cared for properly. Let me help you hold your childs hand forever! I look forward to creating memories with you.

Little One’s Swim

Little One’s Swim provides a safe, fun, creative, child friendly environment – one that encourages babies and young children to feel secure, to explore water, and to learn skills at their pace. We use a child development approach meeting each child’s needs, and utilize age/development appropriate toys, games, and equipment. Our goal is to foster a love and respect for the water, one which will carry throughout their lives, while teaching the necessary water safety and swimming skills to enable them to enjoy water to its fullest, whether it be playing, exercising, competing, or participating in other water sports.

mb art studios

MB Art Studios is the creative work of me (Mary Burrows), an artist residing with my family in Reno, Nevada. I discovered this creative path in 2004, when I was a stay-at-home mom dabbling with watercolors and needle felting…all due to my son attending a waldorf preschool. Next thing I knew I was creating with clay and my mother-in-law gave me her kiln. I was hooked and opened up my world to the beauty of art after having worked in the corporate world for more than 15 years.

MB Art Studios is dedicated to bringing beauty into peoples’ lives. I create my own unique pottery, hold fine art classes for little people to work their magic, and also capture impressions of little ones hands and feet in clay.

Each ceramic piece that I create is one-of-a-kind and hand built in my studio with earthenware or stoneware clay. My work is influenced by my love of simplicity and the beauty and power of the written word. I keep my eyes wide open all the time for inspiration.

To draw students into using Spanish, teachers will use songs, useful phrases, chants and rhymes, and carefully structure the day with familiar routines. Classroom decorations and learning tools will also be in Spanish and English. Students may communicate with the teacher and each other in English or Spanish, but students will increasingly choose to use Spanish.

Nothing To It!

At Nothing To It! our goal is to share our love of gourmet cooking with you. Our philosophy is to not just provide cooking classes and kitchen products- we want to teach you how to use those techniques and tools to create a wonderful meal for you to share with your family and friends. The enjoyment and satisfaction that comes from preparing and enjoying good food is what Nothing to It! is all about.

We started Nothing To It! Cooking School in 1995 at the request of friends eager to improve their skills in the kitchen. Since then, the school has grown from classes around our kitchen table to our present 6,000 square foot Culinary Center. Nothing To It! Culinary Center includes a cooking school with hands-on and demonstration classes taught by a variety of Master Chefs, a Napa Valley style gourmet deli, and a kitchen store with a wide variety of ingredients, appliances and accessories for people who love to cook.

We bring a fresh, ‘non-professional’ approach to culinary education. Over 500 students per month take cooking classes at Nothing To It! and thousands more are reached through Nothing To It! programs on television and radio.

One World Learning Center

One World Learning Center is committed to providing a quality, educational program that promotes high self-esteem, the joy of learning, and an environment of respect and dignity for each other. We believe without question that the early years are THE most important in the social, emotional, and intellectual development of a child’s life. The center provides an environment that is not only safe, positive, and nurturing, but that will also give your child the opportunity to explore, learn, make friends, and most of all to feel successful. We believe that all children deserve to be treated with unconditional love and respect and that each one of them is a unique individual. We believe that the parents are the first and most important teachers in a child’s life and we strive through communication and support to form a partnership between parents and staff for the good of the whole child.

The Center is licensed through the Washoe County Department of Social Services for ages infancy through Kindergarten. Each of our classrooms is designed by age and developmental needs of the children in that classroom. Our classrooms are staffed above Social Services requirements in order to provide the highest quality program. Our curriculum includes language arts, math, hands on science, social studies, Spanish, music, and art with an emphasis on environmental awareness.

We provide an all day State Licensed Kindergarten program with teacher child ratios less than half that provided by the public school system.

We realize that our teachers are our number one asset to providing a quality program for children. One World Children’s Center provides higher wages and excellent benefits compared to the majority of other preschools in the area in order to attract and maintain the best qualified staff. Shin Gan Dojo

Shin Gan Dojo LogoShin Gan Dojo is a Ninpo Bugei dojo, dedicated to studying the authentic arts of the Ninja. Also known as Ninjutsu, the arts of the Ninja are comprised of original old style Japanese Ryu Ha (schools), including Asayama Ichiden Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Shindon Fudo Ryu, Kukishin Ryu, Koto Ryu, Gyoko Ryu, as well as many others. Tested on the battlefields of ancient Japan, these arts contain the earliest forms of Jujutsu and Karate and integrate all areas of self defense, incorporating body strikes, pressure point strikes, choking and grabbing, as well as ground fighting, rolling, falling and acrobatics. The art of the Ninja has been handed down from teacher to student for over 800 years.Shin Gan Dojo teaches the art of the Ninja as close to the original system as possible – honoring the tradition and teachings in its direct lineage from Toshitsugu Takamatsu to Masaaki Hatsumi to Shoto Tanemura to Chadwick Minge.

In addition to studying the arts of the Ninja, Shin Gan Dojo also offers the opportunity to learn the principles of pistol and rifle craft, as handed down by Michael Harries. Students who are serious about firearms and wish to further their understanding of survival may also pursue this truly American martial art.

  • We have over eight hundred years of martial arts history.
  • Our martial art system is based on practical training scenarios.
  • Our training prepares students for real life.
  • We have a fun and exciting atmosphere.
  • We have a clean, safe, professional environment.

Sensei Brian Simmons

I have been training in the art of Ninpo for over 17 years under the direct guidance of Sensei Chadwick Minge. In 1994, I was awarded the rank of Sho Dan by Sensei Chadwick Minge and, after joining the Genbukan, was honored with the rank of Sho Dan directly from Tanemura Sensei during one of his visits to Yamato Dojo.

During my tenure as Dai Sempai (Head Assistant), I have since achieved the rank of 3rd Level Instructor’s License (out of 5 levels). Because of the all-inclusive nature of Ninpo, the 3rd Level Instructor’s License is comparative to various ranks in the following arts:

In 1994, I was given the honor of assisting Sensei Minge with teaching first children’s classes, then adult classes. In addition, after being awarded the rank of Ichi Kyu, I was allowed to teach students in private lessons. I eventually began teaching children’s and adult classes solo, and have been teaching students both privately and publicly for over 10 years.

Sonshine Gardens

Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.  Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Sonshine Gardens Daycare & Preschool is committed to providing a safe, faith based family environment where we will help your child grow in 5-key interconnected areas of development.

  1. Physical development:  Through physically stimulating games and creative activities.
  2. Intellectual development: Through activities and exercises relating to the physical growth of the brain.
  3. Social development: Through helping your child to gain the knowledge and skills of communication needed to interact successfully with others.
  4. Emotional development: Healthy emotional development lays the foundation for academic performance, mental health, and healthy relationships. Children have the capacity to regulate and understand their emotions and behavior and to manage successful, appropriate forms of expression and interactions with others.
  5. Moral/Spiritual development: the growing understanding of right and wrong (conscience) and laying a spiritual foundation in teaching and training our children about God and His love for us, while establishing God’s Word as the spiritual foundation and Jesus as the cornerstone to the building blocks of life.

We consider ourselves your child’s extended family, planting the Word and seed of faith, nurturing with Love, watering with Truth, and preparing your child for Kindergarten and their lives ahead. Our children are our inheritance and our future and we have a God ordained obligation to teach them well. At Sonshine Gardens, your child will experience love, significance and a true sense of belonging.   Our gifted staff of childcare providers and teachers will love on your child from the moment they enter the doors and keep them in their care until you pick them up each evening.  There is nothing more important than the healthy balanced development of a child.

Spring Forward for Autism Walk

Speared by the growing desire across society to diagnose children suffering from autism spectrum disorders, the University of Nevada School of Medicine’s Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology joined forces with other health care and medical disciplines in northern Nevada to form a unusual collaborative approach to diagnosing autism, the University Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment, or UCAN, team.

Pulling together expertise across medical and behavioral disciplines gives team members the opportunity to learn from each other and view the assessed children from different perspectives leading to an accurate diagnosis.

The UCAN team and the Lili Claire Foundation will both benefit from the “Spring Forward for Autism” 5k walk/run on April 25 (9 a.m. for runners, 10 a.m. for walkers) at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Mackay Stadium when supporters don their running shoes to raise funds to benefit these organizations assisting those living with autism in Northern Nevada.

The fee to participate is $25 if registered before April 25 or $30 the day of the event.

Since other disorders can often present as autism to the untrained eye, the UCAN team’s multidisciplinary approach rules out other conditions to get to the true diagnosis. When professional opinions are combined, a more complete diagnosis emerges.

“We decided to approach assessment from a transdisciplinary aspect due to the complicated nature of the diagnosing process as there are no medical or genetic tests for autism,” said Debra Vigil, Ph.D., director of the team and associate professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the School of Medicine. “Our goal is to provide comprehensive and diagnostic evaluation for children who may have autism or other neurodevelopmental disabilities.”

Participating volunteer agencies on the UCAN team include Nevada Early Intervention Services, Washoe County School District, Northern Nevada Child and Adolescent Services, University of Nevada, Reno’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and the School of Medicine’s Departments of Speech Pathology and Audiology and Psychiatry.
At a minimum, the UCAN assessment team consists of a child psychiatrist, school or child psychologist, an occupational therapist, a speech language pathologist, and a developmental specialist. Additional team members from the Washoe County School District or Child Behavioral Services may also participate.

For more information on the “Spring Forward for Autism” walk/run, contact Kari Horn at the Lili Claire Foundation at (775)682-7025.

The Goddard School

The Goddard School® provides the foundation to encourage your child’s lifelong love of learning™. In our warm, loving atmosphere caring teachers support the healthy development of your child from six weeks to six-years-old. Our year round program offers your family the choice of either a half- or full-day schedule.

The Goddard School® philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices and the program facilitates learning through play. Children explore learning centers for creative art, math, dramatic play, science, and computers; they learn to ask questions; and they take time to make friends and socialize.

Whether gently holding your infant, encouraging your toddler to share or providing your preschooler with a wide range of enriching activities, our teachers understand your child’s needs. Goddard Developmental Guidelines form the basis of unique lesson plans that are brought to life in fun and imaginative ways. Teachers balance each day with quiet activities, spirited music and movement, and plenty of outdoor climbing, running and jumping.

Goddard’s curriculum also includes foreign language, sign language, manners, and fitness, including yoga – all specifically designed and equipped for preschool children.

  • Foreign language study has been linked to improvements in children’s creative inquiry, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Sign allows babies to communicate their pre-verbal wants and needs and it has also been shown to increase preschool-age children’s confidence and self-esteem.
  • The innovative manners program fosters acquisition of four essential skills: friendship, compassion, cooperation and kindness.
  • The Fitness program exposes children to the skills necessary to set the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Thirty-One Gifts

Seven years ago I was working full time in corporate America, trying to live life with my husband and our two children, managing work, home, church, kids’ activities and still trying to find time for myself. On top of all that, I am a girl, and girls must shop, right? My busy lifestyle made it so difficult to find time to visit all of those cute little gift boutiques where the really great products are. I decided it was time for working moms, single women, and even grandmothers to get a chance to shop on their terms. I had a great experience with direct selling and knew of the potential behind owning your own business and prayed diligently about offering something that would help women contribute to their lives financially and the lives of countless others. It is from this passionate resolve that Thirty-One was born.

Our mission is to celebrate, encourage and reward women through offering quality products and an outstanding opportunity to become successful business owners. We have seen this mission played out across the years in the individual lives of so many women who now have their own “Thirty-One Story”.

Our products are exclusive to Thirty-One and provide style and convenience at an amazingly affordable price. From our signature purses and totes to kid’s items and accents for the home, you’ll find something to fit every personality and situation. We continue to develop new products built on the idea that our products must be stylish, functional, affordable and easy to give as gifts to encourage someone special.

Seven years later, our Thirty-One family has grown to more than 10,000 Consultants nationwide. With production facilities in two states, we are still seeing thousands of women find their place in this world through owning their very own Thirty-One business. Many work full time jobs and use their Thirty-One income to help pay for those extras in life like vacations, cars, and shopping sprees. Others have seen Thirty-One become a lifeline to their families in difficult economic times. Despite all the bad news we hear today, our Consultants are selling at record rates. Maybe you would consider owning your own business through Thirty-One. The doors are wide open. Ask your Thirty-One Consultant how easy it was for her to get started.
